Professor & Rector
Val Samonis, PhD, CPC
The Global Academy for Experiential Learning, Business, Economics & Technology
Val Samonis, PhD, CPC, is Professor and Rector of the Academy of Experiential Learning™ (AEL), a global educational initiative dedicated to integrating academic knowledge with real-world experience to develop the next generation of leaders, innovators, and responsible global citizens.
With more than 50 years of international experience as a scholar, educator, consultant, and entrepreneur, Professor Samonis has worked at the intersection of economics, business, technology, finance, management, and emerging markets. His academic and professional journey includes Stanford University, the University of Toronto, Columbia University, the Institute for New Economic Thinking, the Blockchain Research Institute, Royal Roads University, and Vilnius University.
For some 15 years ending in 2000, he directed a globally unique Research Seminar Series on Emerging Markets at the University of Toronto, sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, delivered onsite, online, and in dual mode. At the University of Toronto he also directed the Mykulak Skill-Enhancement Program for younger scholars from Ukraine.
Toward the end of the 1990s, he was invited by Stanford University's Economic Transition Group — including Economics Nobel laureates Leontief, Tobin, Solow, Klein, and Arrow — to work hands-on with Russia's reform leadership, alongside Boris Nemtsov, then Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister and the boss of the entire spectrum of Russia's economic reforms. He worked in Russian with the entire top group of Russia's economic reformers. Some of them, like Melkumov, he invited to his Seminar Series at the University of Toronto.
A distinctive chapter of his career involved working with seven Nobel laureates in Economics at Stanford and other leading institutions, providing him with firsthand exposure to some of the world’s most influential economic thinkers and shaping his emphasis on first-principles thinking, empirical evidence, and practical action. Professor Samonis is a political refugee from communist Poland. He was directed by Nobel laureate Prof. Wassily Leontief, himself a refugee from the USSR. Leontief developed the Input-Output Method of mathematical economic research, published in his famous book The Structure of the American Economy (Stanford, 1936).
Professor Samonis is recognized for his work in global management, comparative economic systems, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and the knowledge economy. His research and teaching bridge East and West, developed and emerging economies, and the academic and business worlds.
As Rector, he is building AEL as a 21st-century global learning ecosystem — experiential, interdisciplinary, digital, and oriented toward real-world impact. His mission is to transform experience into knowledge, knowledge into capability, and capability into freedom, innovation, and human prosperity.
